One key to successful online marketing is to be prepared. A quote often attributed to Mark Twain reads:
“It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.”
While our friend Mark Twain lived in a time well before the need for online marketing, his advice is still extremely relevant.
You have a better chance at success if you don’t wait until the last minute. If you keep a stockpile of marketing material at your disposal, you won’t ever have to worry about not being prepared.
Your marketing material should be a balance of both evergreen material (ie content that is always relevant) and timely releases (ie content that capitalizes on a trending topic).
Work on compiling a library of material that you can draw from in future. Keep a paper or digital notebook handy so you can jot down ideas when they come to you.
2. Stay on Current Trends
The second key to successful online marketing is it needs to stay current and it will help if you keep to a schedule.
There are lots of tools you can use to find trending topics. LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and other sites have special search functions that inform you about what is trending.
Another good place to check is news sites that feature a “Ten Things to Know for Today” section.
Have a calendar, but keep in mind that it is ok to deviate from it; if an event or an idea comes up that is immediately relevant, it is ok to adjust your calendar.
3. Keep Your Marketing “Fit”
The third key to marketing is it needs to be maintained on a regular basis.

If you want to keep making gains, you have to put the time in on a regular basis. It is not a “once and done” kind of thing.
